Sneak Peek – The Last Cowboy
The last rays of sunlight spilled across Jasper’s land, catching on the weathered fence posts and the dust rising under Rebel’s hooves. He leaned against the post, arms crossed, scent of pine and old wood grounding him. This land was his—untouched by the Cullens, untouched by Alice. Twenty quiet acres where he could breathe.
Breathe. Something he hadn’t done right in years.
Her face kept finding him in the stillness. Bella Swan. The girl who once bled in front of him, now steady-eyed and standing her ground. He’d expected to find the fragile human Edward had nearly shattered. What he’d seen instead was a spine made of steel wrapped in soft skin.
And it stirred something in him. Something dangerous.
Miles away, Bella stared through her bedroom window into the trees, searching shadows she wasn’t sure were even there. But she felt him. A presence not hovering like Edward, not demanding like Alice. Watching. Quiet. Safe in the way danger sometimes is when it chooses not to strike.
She used to think love meant surrender. Now she wasn’t so sure.
He hadn’t spoken a word since the airport. Not to her. And still, she felt the weight of his silence more than Edward’s constant whispers.
She hadn’t dreamed of Edward once since Italy. But Jasper? His voice came to her in sleep, low and steady, like thunder rolling across open plains. He didn’t beg. He didn’t promise forever.
He just listened.
And somehow, in that space between two broken people, something was growing. Not yet love. Not yet fire.
But heat.
